Lichtzoekers

Street art sculptures escaping the dark

by Senne Dehandschutter

A longing for wonder

Lichtzoekers are life-sized representations of real people, installed on façades and rooftops. Often caught in difficult positions, almost falling. Yet they all seem to be climbing upward, in search of light and sight. Dreaming of what lies beyond the blind wall or high rooftop. It's the dream of a wondrous horizon, knowing that place might not truly exist.

With this project, we push back against the dark shadow cast by the current zeitgeist. It's a cultural response to the intensity of today's world. The darkness around us, and the one within us. We highlight the universal human drive to keep climbing towards the light. To keep reaching for the horizon.

In the words of the famous poet Dylan Thomas: "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

What's next?

From our Lichtzoeker studio, we will continue to create and install new sculptures, one or two each month. A silent spectacle woven through the city, meant to move and inspire. First against the backdrop of beautiful, if sometimes grim, Brussels, and later in other cities too.
